Be Ready
Expect a shot or cross at all times and try to stay well balanced
Watch the ball and get behind the line of its flight whenever possible
Always try to retain the ball if possible. Take the ball with your hands in a 'W' shape with the finger and arm muscles relaxed. Secure the ball within the shell of your body by pulling it into the stomach as soon as you can.
If you have to parry or deflect the ball, direct it out to the sides incase the opposition is following up and get to your feet quickly.
Be in constant communication with your defence. From your position you have the best view of whats going on and it is vital that you point things out to your defenders, I.E. leaving a man unmarked.
If you want the ball, call for it quickly and clearly.
