After 180 league appearances for Wimbledon, Neil Sullivan decided it was time to move on and joined Tottenham Hotspur soon after the Dons’ relegation from the Premiership.
Sullivan had come through the youth ranks with the Dons and following the retirements of Jim Leighton and Andy Goram from international football the Sutton-born shot-stopper became Scotland’s number one, thanks to his grandmother’s roots.
He was part of the squad that travelled to the 1998 World Cup but he failed to start a game for the Scots, who fell at the first hurdle. Sullivan responded by taking the Dons’ Player of the Year award for 1999. He was powerless, though, as the Dons 14-year stint in the top flight came to an end.
Only Middlesbrough’s Mark Schwarzer bettered Sullivan’s total of 176 saves during 1999-2000, but the Scottish number one will be disappointed to have kept only five clean sheets. With a better defence in front of him, he will be hoping things will improve following his move to White Hart Lane.
